Some product packaging carries nutrition claims, using terms such as "fat-free" and "low in salt". This page explains what is really meant by those terms. A nutrient claim is any statement, which describes or compares the level of a nutrient in a food. Nutrient claims emphasise the nutritional benefits of a product and help you to identify foods with a specific benefit, such as "high in fibre". Nutrient claims are commonly made about fat, sugar, cholesterol, fibre, salt or energy. Such claims are regulated by a voluntary industry code of practice and legal regulations. When a claim is made, that nutrient must also appear in the nutrition panel.

Such claims, especially referring to food additives, are a quick and effective way of communicating to consumers. Negative claims are commonly made about no artificial colourings or flavourings, no flavour enhancers or preservatives, or no added sugar.
